Sept 2003-Portage Lumber 50th Anniversary
Portage, WI - September 2003 will be an exciting time at Portage Lumber Do It Best. We will be celebrating our store’s 50th Anniversary with promotions and special events commemorating this milestone accomplishment.
In August 1953, Portage Lumber opened its doors for business. It offered “Everything in Building Materials”-- Lumber, Millwork, Roofing, Builders Hardware, Cement, Plaster, Plywood and Wallboards.
The new business was located on East Wisconsin Street in the Old Firari Building.
The business was owned by a corporation of which F.L. Chase was president and Theodore W. Chase was secretary-manager. Portage Lumber Co. was under the management of Ray Dorn. At the time, he lived in DeForest and later moved to Portage. Ray brought many years of experience in the building material business to Portage Lumber, having been employed by Koltes Lumber Company in Waunakee.
A demand for carpentry work spurred the construction segment of Portage Lumber Co. into existence. Ray Dorn and crew attended to the building needs until 1968 when Don Roeker joined Dorn Construction as General Manager. Key construction projects over the years included a contract for re-roofing the Governor’s Mansion in 1991, CESA 5, Silver Lake Apartments, Assembly of God Church in Portage and many homes, government buildings, apartments, clinics, banks and churches in the area communities. In addition, over the years Portage Lumber supplied building materials to an estimated 3000 new homes and countless additions and remodeling projects.
The business has grown over the years and expanded into new products and services along the way. In 1967, the store added a carpet and drapery center. Today the Home Décor Department, under management by Doreen (Dorn) Herbert, offers a wide selection of home improvement and decorating products. In 1969, the store was remodeled and took on the Do-it-Center membership and logo. In 2000 the store again acquired a new look with the addition of 24,000 sq. ft of retail space and another 8,000 sq. ft under-roof lumber space.
Ray Dorn’s sons, Dennis and Ron, have been active participants in the business for 32 years. Today they hold the majority of stock ownership of Portage Lumber Do It Best and serve as CEO and COO respectively.
Presently, Portage Lumber has 41 employees—(full time, part time, and seasonal). Our dedicated team serves a customer mix of retail, professional and commercial customers as their supplier of choice.
Portage Lumber is a destination for area residents and continues to grow as it continually strives to offer value and personal attention that customers deserve.
